Buy Gamaret – Swiss wine enjoyment with character

Gamaret is a Swiss grape variety with a strong character and fascinating origins. This new variety was created at the research centre of the Swiss Federal Research Station for Plant Production in Pully. It was there that Gamaret was developed in 1970 from a cross between Gamay and Reichensteiner. The aim was to create a variety that was both resistant to disease and produced high-quality wines with a low expression.

Origin and development of the grape variety

The work on this grape variety was influenced, among others, by Dominique Maigre and André Jaquinet. It was officially added to the Swiss variety list in 1991. Gamaret is therefore a relatively young addition to the Swiss wine landscape, but it quickly established itself. Today, the variety is particularly widespread in the canton of Vaud, but also in other regions of Switzerland. The vineyard area is over 400 hectares, and rising.

Characteristics of the Gamaret vine

The Gamaret variety is characterised by its robustness. It is largely resistant to grey mould rot, ripens early and produces stable yields. This makes it particularly attractive for winemakers who prioritise quality and sustainability. The Gamaret berries are dark with thick skin, which contributes to the intense colour of the wines made from them.

Wine profile and aromas

Gamaret wines are full-bodied, with intense reflections and a rich bouquet. The aromas are reminiscent of dark berries, plums, and often chocolate or herbs. On the palate, they have a dense structure with well-integrated tannins and a fine spiciness. Thanks to these characteristics, Gamaret is suitable both as a soloist in a glass and for high-quality blends.

Wine and food – perfect pairings

Gamaret is a versatile wine. It harmonises perfectly with meat dishes, especially game, lamb or beef. Savoury mushroom dishes or strong cheeses such as Gruyère also go extremely well with this wine. Its depth and aromatic density make it the ideal companion for festive menus and expressive dishes.

Storage and vintage diversity

Gamaret wines are characterised by their good storage ability. Depending on the vintage and the maturing process, these reds can be kept for several years, during which time their bouquet continues to develop. Particularly well-balanced vintages develop additional notes of dried fruit or fine spices after a few years.

Gamaret in blends

In addition to being aged as a single variety wine, Gamaret is also blended with other Swiss varieties, such as Garanoir. This combination gives the wine even more complexity and depth without detracting from its clear identity.
