Divico wine – an innovative Swiss grape variety with character

Divico wine represents a new generation of sustainable red wines from Switzerland. The Divico grape variety combines modern cultivation with deep-rooted origins and demonstrates what contemporary viticulture can look like. As a fungus-resistant grape variety, Divico is aimed at consumers who value quality, environmental awareness and expression in the glass.

The name Divico refers to a Helvetian leader and underlines the strong connection to Switzerland. This symbolism is reflected in the character of the wine, which is powerful, structured and distinctive.

The Divico grape variety and its origins

Divico is the result of a targeted cross between Gamaret and Bronner. The variety was developed as part of a breeding programme by Agroscope, in collaboration with the Fribourg Wine Institute. The aim of the research was to combine resistance properties against powdery mildew, downy mildew and grey rot.

Bronner contributes genes from American, Asian and European ancestors, while Gamaret is responsible for colour, tannins and structure. This crossbreeding took place in several steps, supported by modern resistance markers and breeding techniques.

Divico, Gamaret and modern breeding

Compared to Gamaret, Divico shows greater resistance to fungal diseases. The use of plant protection products can be significantly reduced, with often only a few plant protection treatments required until flowering. For winegrowers, this means less stress on the vineyards and more sustainable cultivation.

Standard seedlings have been available in vine nurseries for several years. The vineyard area is growing continuously, but remains controlled to ensure quality and adaptation to different wine-growing regions.

Cultivation, growth and ripening behaviour

Divico shows vigorous, semi-upright growth on the vine. Ripening begins relatively early, while the grapes are harvested late, allowing for a long ripening period. The loose grape structure reduces the risk of rot and promotes even ripening.

The yield is similar to other modern varieties such as Garanoir. In high-risk areas, bird protection may be necessary, as the berries are attractive when fully ripe.

Aromas, colour and structure of Divico wine

Divico wine is intensely coloured and deep dark. The nose reveals aromas of blueberries, blackcurrants, violets and spices such as pepper and cloves. Toasted notes may be added depending on the winemaking methods used.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, with prominent tannins and a clear structure. The finish is long and spicy, carried by fruit and freshness.

Maturation, blends and style

Divico can be matured as a single variety or used in blends. Especially in combination with other robust varieties, it develops a complex profile. Maturation often focuses on structure and ageing potential.

The winemaking methods aim to preserve the natural quality of the grape variety and bring out the aromas clearly.

Divico wine and food combinations

Divico wine goes well with meat dishes such as beef, lamb or game. It also comes into its own with mature cheeses. The tannins harmonise with strong dishes, while the fruit adds freshness.

Divico is also suitable for braised dishes, mushroom dishes or spicy cuisine. Its structure makes it a versatile accompaniment at the table.

Significance of Divico in Swiss viticulture

Divico plays an important role in Swiss viticulture. The grape variety stands for innovation, research and sustainable development. As a carrier of modern breeding, it combines quality and environmental responsibility.
