Braised beef, grilled steak, a delicate game stew, and duck breast with sugar snap peas pair exceptionally well with this red wine from Saint-Julien. Additionally, veal brisket with beans and tomatoes, braised chicken in red wine, refined pasta with mushrooms and truffles, or a selection of savory hard cheeses complement Château Lagrange beautifully.
Château Lagrange is located in Saint-Julien in the Bordeaux region. It was classified as a Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855. In 1790, Jean-Valère Cabarrus, a prominent shipowner and influential merchant, invested in the estate and established its commercial distribution. In 1820, he commissioned Visconti to build the Tuscan tower, which became the iconic symbol of Château Lagrange. Of the estate's total area of 157 hectares, 118 hectares are planted with vines.
Deep ruby red with violet reflections and a subtle ocher edge. Significantly more approachable than the 2010 vintage, the Lagrange 2011 presents notes of black currants and lightly peppered cherries. The woody tones are perfectly integrated, with dominant flavors of mocha and caramel. The entry is meaty, with a distinctive acidity that gives it a firm tannic structure. With a medium body and a long finish, it is an accessible wine for the near future but also has the potential for remarkable aging.
The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates. A first selection is done manually with whole clusters, followed by a second selection using an optical camera. The vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, using 102 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks corresponding to 103 vineyard plots. The selection of the plots is based on grape variety, vine age, terroir, and grape ripeness. The winemaking process follows traditional methods with moderate daily pumping over or gentle punching down. The final wine is aged for 21 months in barrels, 60% of which are new.
