In the 1980s, Salvatore Di Gaetano and Vinzia Novara founded Firriato with the aim of bottling Sicily's diversity. The centre is Baglio Sorìa near Trapani: 110 hectares of red marl and clay soils near the sea. This is where Santagostino Rosso was created – an icon of the house for over 30 years. Today, the family cultivates six certified organic vineyards from volcano to coast and continues its vision of an ‘authentic terroir’: pure Sicily, sustainable and modern in its thinking.
Deep ruby red in the glass. On the nose, ripe black cherries, blackberries and plums, finely interwoven with spicy notes of black pepper, liquorice and dark chocolate. Dense and round on the palate, velvety tannins, elegant balance between fruit, spice and subtle woodiness. Long, powerful finish with Mediterranean warmth.
Aged for 6 months in oak barrels.
The vines for Santagostino Rosso grow on the Baglio Sorìa estate in the Trapani countryside. On clayey-calcareous soils at an altitude of 200 metres, facing south to south-west, they benefit from plenty of sunshine and fresh sea breezes. This terroir gives the grapes a balance of power, elegance and Sicilian character.
