The Aftertaste

Arzo Merlot Ticino

DOC
This Merlot carries that unmistakable Ticino pull that does not reveal everything at once. First red fruit, then menthol, then liquorice – and suddenly you stay at the table longer than planned. A wine for roasts, conversations and the small luxury of not putting the glass down too early.

Culinary recommendation
chevron-down

Excellent with roasts, braised dishes, red meat and hard cheeses. Particularly enjoyable with brasato al Merlot, roast beef with polenta or aged alpine cheese from Ticino.

Wine history
chevron-down

Gialdi Vini was founded in 1953 by Guglielmo Gialdi in Mendrisio and initially focused on wine trading. In 1984, the purchase of a winery in the Bassa Leventina marked the beginning of its own wine production. Since then, Gialdi has become one of the leading names for Ticino Merlot, combining modern cellar techniques with a strong focus on origin, precision and quality.

Tasting note
chevron-down

Deep ruby red. The nose is complex and fresh, with ripe red berries, subtle menthol notes and hints of liquorice. On the palate rich and full-bodied with a firm opening, fruity freshness, refined tannins and a harmonious, persistent finish.

Vinification
chevron-down

Traditional vinification with 14 days of maceration at 28–30 °C in stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures for 14 months in barriques, 75% new oak and 25% second-fill barrels.

Vineyards

The grapes come from Ticino, where warm days, cool nights and mineral-rich soils allow Merlot to develop remarkable expression. Arzo refers to the southern part of the canton, known for fuller, riper yet fresh Merlot styles.
