A wine with fine meat from the grill or oven: rack of lamb with rosemary and polenta or beef entrecôte with morel jus. With increasing bottle age, this wine also harmonises beautifully with game dishes such as saddle of venison with cranberries.
The roots of Château Prieuré-Lichine go back to a Romanesque priory in Cantenac, founded by monks from Vertheuil Abbey; the ‘church wines’ were highly regarded from early on, with the first official mention dating back to 1444. In the 20th century, Alexis Lichine (‘Pope of Wine’) shaped the modern era; today, the estate combines history with contemporary precision in the heart of the Margaux appellation.
On the nose, cassis, blackberry and violet, underpinned by cedar wood, tobacco leaf and a hint of graphite. Medium-bodied to powerful on the palate with a silky texture, tightly knit, ripe tannins and clear freshness; the fruit remains precise, the finish long, with notes of dark cherry, spice and fine herbal spice – classic Margaux polish.
Hand-picked in small crates, rigorous selection (vibrating tables, manual and visual), gentle filling by gravity; fermentation and maceration for around 21–28 days, followed by ageing in French barriques, around one third to two fifths of which are new.
