The vineyards of the city of Bern are steeped in history. Originally, the slopes along Lake Biel belonged to the monasteries of Fraubrunnen, Thorberg, St. Johann, Frienisberg, and Münchenbuchsee. Following the Reformation in 1528, these ecclesiastical properties were nationalized and came under the ownership of the city and Republic of Bern. After the fall of the Old Bern, the city’s estates were separated from the former republic’s holdings, and in 1802, all vineyards were transferred to the Burgergemeinde Bern. Later, in 1852, the vineyards were passed to the newly established Einwohnergemeinde Bern, founded in 1833. Since then, they have been managed by the city’s finance department and overseen by a vineyard administrator.
Today, the city of Bern owns around 20 hectares of vines in prime locations along Lake Biel, between La Neuveville and Schafis, making it the largest vineyard owner in the canton of Bern.
Since early 2022, the vineyard has been certified with the BIOSUISSE label.
