The Spiez vineyard is one of the highest-altitude wine-growing regions north of the Alps. In 1927, Hans Barben brought together a group of wine enthusiasts to begin cultivating Riesling-Sylvaner the following year. Just two years later, this grape variety was replaced with Chasselas, but it quickly became evident that Spiez’s soil was unsuitable for it. The vines were removed and once again replaced with Riesling-Sylvaner. The dedicated wine lovers founded an association that focused on expanding the vineyard in the following years. In 1942, this association was transformed into a cooperative.
