The vineyard in Spiez is one of the highest-altitude wine-growing regions north of the Alps. In 1927, Hans Barben brought together a group of wine enthusiasts who started cultivating Riesling-Sylvaner as early as 1928. A subsequent experiment with the grape variety Gutedel quickly revealed that the soil was unsuitable, leading to a return to Riesling-Sylvaner. The dedicated group established an association to expand the vineyard area further. In 1942, this association evolved into a cooperative, laying the foundation for the future of winemaking in Spiez.
The aroma evokes dark forest berries, ripe black cherries, a touch of ivy, and a subtle hint of tobacco, accompanied by delicate woody spices. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with fresh acidity and a finely balanced tannin structure. The finish is long-lasting and refined.
The mash was fermented in a 400-liter fermentation vat, with pressing occurring before the fermentation was complete. The wine was then aged for a minimum of 12 months in barriques.
The vines primarily thrive on the steep slopes of the vineyard.
