The Spiez vineyard is one of the highest-altitude wine-growing areas north of the Alps. In 1927, Hans Barben gathered a group of enthusiasts to begin cultivating a new variety, Riesling-Sylvaner, in 1928. Just two years later, the variety was replaced with Chasselas, but it soon became clear that the soils in Spiez were unsuitable for it. The vines were removed and Riesling-Sylvaner was replanted. The wine lovers founded an association, which in the following years focused on expanding the vineyard. In 1942, the association was transformed into a cooperative.
