Tasting notes for the 2018–2023 vintages
2023
Clear and bright robe with celadon reflections. Very nice harmony of the bouquet with citrus fruits and exotic fruits. Barrel ageing with very long toasting at low temperatures perfectly highlights the freshness and crispness of the 2023 harvest. Our vineyards in Turtmann produced a perfect harvest with excellent health and an ideal sugar-acid balance. This wine is taut on the palate with mouth-watering acidity and a slight salty note on the finish that lingers pleasantly. Already very enjoyable with a platter of Fines de claires.
2022
A splendid vintage with a bright robe that transitions into pale yellow with greenish reflections. The bouquet is filled with exotic fruits like lychee and grapefruit. Barrel aging adds complexity with fine brioche notes. The palate is rich and flavorful, highlighted by crisp citrus acidity and sorrel. The long finish shows prominent oak notes, which will mellow harmoniously after a few months. A young, promising vintage to discover this summer.
2021
A bright, crystal-clear robe with yellow-green reflections. The nose is elegant, revealing wisteria and citrus aromas. A richer background of pineapple and mango, perfectly underlined by subtle barrel aging. On the palate, fresh and taut with length and complexity. A salty and spicy note extends the pleasure, characterizing the greatness of this beautiful vintage. We particularly enjoy pairing this Ambassadeur with lobster bisque.
2020
This wine mirrors the impressions of the previous year. A great wine with a radiant, golden robe. The bouquet is rich in aromas of ripe white fruits, highlighted by lychee. The palate is generous with caramelized fruit, balanced by a delicate acidity. The long finish is carried by citrus fruits and sweet spices. An exceptional wine, best enjoyed with sautéed scallops in saffron.
2019
A straw-yellow robe with golden reflections. The 2019 vintage presents citrus and roasted notes, reflecting the ripe fruits of a warm year. Sunny and ample on the palate, with fine tannins supporting the rich background. Fresh acidity and a subtle saltiness enhance the delicate taste. A wine that should be enjoyed with great pleasure right now.
2018
A bright lemon-yellow color with celadon green reflections. The bouquet reveals candied citrus and dried apricots. A light touch of oak and brioche adds complexity to the aromatic expression. Fresh and refined on the palate, with tension and abundant fruit. A sunny, vibrant, and balanced vintage, still highly enjoyable to drink.
Since the 2013 vintage, one of the great ambassadors of the Mathier estate, and the equally successful counterpart to the red L'Ambassadeur de Diego Mathier, the world champion Pinot Noir. The winemaker of the decade often refers to the white Ambassadeur as "the cool freshness of the mountains," with a strict yield reduction of half a liter per square meter during harvest.
Heida, making up 65% of the white blend, provides the wine with structure and freshness. Petite Arvine (25%) ensures its distinctive aroma and subtle saltiness, while Ermitage (10%) adds a fruity note of raspberries. As the white blend ages, it develops additional notes of white truffle.
The juice from the destemmed and pressed grapes is aged unfiltered and by variety for six months on the lees in new oak barrels. The wine is then blended and aged for another ten months in the same oak barrels. After a total of 16 months of maturation in French barrels, the white L'Ambassadeur de Diego Mathier AOC reaches its perfect maturity.
The three grape varieties Heida, Ermitage, and Petite Arvine are cultivated in the finest slate-rich vineyards of Sion and Sierre, as well as in higher, clay-rich soils in Turtmann.
