This red wine is a versatile companion to hearty dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with grilled or braised red meats, such as a juicy grilled steak, as well as game dishes like venison stew. Spicy cheeses, such as aged Pecorino, also complement the wine’s flavors beautifully.

Wine history

The origins of Martoccia date back centuries. The estate, initially referenced as a farmstead, can be traced back to the 14th century. Records from the parchment archives of the Sant’Agostino Monastery reveal that the vineyards of Martoccia were already the subject of notarized contracts and land transactions.

One such document notes that Michele di Micheluccio granted a vineyard in the Mont’Acino district, specifically in the Martoccia area, to Fra Scolaio – a transaction meticulously recorded in historical texts.

Martoccia’s prominence continued into the 15th century. Egidio Assunto Brigidi, citing the “Cronaca” manuscript by Marcoantonio Rigaccini, highlights that Martoccia and Renai were celebrated even then as prime vineyard locations for producing the finest Brunello di Montalcino. This storied heritage remains an integral part of the estate’s identity today.

Tasting note

The wine reveals a vibrant ruby red color, gradually transitioning to garnet hues with aging. The bouquet offers notes of ripe cherries, juicy plums, and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied with lively acidity and flavors of red fruits. The finish is fresh and long-lasting. This wine stands out for its impressive aging potential.

Vinification

After harvesting, the grapes are carefully cut and pressed, initiating a fermentation process of approximately 20 days. The wine is then racked and stored in temperature-controlled containers to encourage malolactic fermentation. It is subsequently aged for up to 36 months, partly in large Slavonian oak barrels and partly in French oak barriques. Before being released to the market, the wine matures in the bottle for up to 6 months.
