In the heart of Valais, where sun and stone come together, where the Rhone wind caresses the vines and the sun-drenched terraces bring out the best in the soil, a characterful wine is maturing: the Cuvée Diego Mathier, known as Der Grandseigneur. It stands there like a true nobleman – proud, charming and with a sophisticated depth. It blends power and elegance, carried by notes of blackberry and pepper, enveloped in the dignity of fine barriques. It is not loud, but lets its voice speak in velvety fullness – a gentleman who honours the Valais.
Deep, purplish ruby colour with beautiful intensity. Its visual density promises beautiful concentration. The nose is intense and complex, opening with notes of jammy black fruits – blackberry and blackcurrant – carried by a touch of fig and date. These are followed by toasted, vanilla and slightly smoky aromas from barrel ageing, as well as spicy notes – black pepper, liquorice and cloves – typical of Syrah and barrel ageing.
The attack is full and velvety, revealing generous substance. The tannins are present but well integrated, providing structure without harshness. Merlot rounds out the whole, while Cabernet Sauvignon imposes its integrity and freshness. Syrah offers depth and spice. The natural sweetness brought by the dried grapes gives an almost smooth sensation, without being sweet, balanced by a nice acidity that extends the finish.
