The red grail

Hospices de Salquenen Assemblage red

AOC Valais
For travelers and pilgrims, the Hospitaller hospice, founded in Salgesch in the 13th century, was often seen as a holy grail, likely due to its wine. Here, they found divine protection, shelter, and nourishment. The red assemblage proudly displays this grail on its label, offering its owner equally divine moments of pleasure.

Pairs perfectly with beef, veal, lamb, game, pasta, and hard cheese. Especially delicious with roasted veal fillet and a flavorful thyme jus.

Wine history
chevron-down

Salgesch still proudly bears the Maltese cross in its coat of arms. In the Middle Ages, clergymen settled in the heart of Valais and fulfilled their vows by providing travelers, the sick, and those in need with hospitality and medical care. Thanks to generous donations from the local population, they were able to accomplish truly knightly deeds.

The winemakers of Salgesch supported the Hospitallers by providing them with wine. These noble wines were stored in large wooden barrels in the cool cellars of the hospice. At the time, the village well water was often contaminated with harmful germs, so the Hospitallers relied on pure wine to restore the strength of weary travelers and the sick. It’s no surprise that the quality of this wine soon became renowned far beyond the Simplon.

The wines of the "Hospices de Salquenen" line, created by Diego Mathier, winemaker of the decade, are a delightful tribute to the unmatched dedication of the Hospitallers, a legacy that Salgesch remains proud of today.

Tasting note
chevron-down

In the glass, an intense red hue with violet highlights. On the nose, black fruits dominate. On the palate, it is flavorful and fruit-forward, with a fresh finish and well-integrated tannins.

Vinification
chevron-down

A short maceration to preserve the valuable fruit flavors and extract only a small amount of tannin. This is followed by traditional vinification in stainless steel tanks. The grape varieties in this blend are aged separately.
