The midwife wine

Humagne Blanc Les Pyramides

AOC Valais
The Humagne Blanc likely owes its name to the fact that it made its way into the local midwives' birth kit. Derived from the Latin Humanum vinum, "wine healthy for humans," this calcium- and iron-rich wine was offered to new mothers for strength. It surely also helped calm a few nervous and idle fathers.

Humagne Blanc is an excellent companion for an aperitif, as well as for appetizers, cheese, and dishes with freshwater fish, such as steamed pike with leek strips.

Wine history
chevron-down

Humagne Blanc is one of the indigenous grape varieties of Valais, meaning it originates from this region. Due to its high calcium and iron content, it earned a reputation for being healthy and quickly became known as the midwives' wine. It was given to strengthen both the new mother and, occasionally, the newborn. The beauty and grounded nature of Valaisan children, by the way, are said to come from the enriched breast milk thanks to this wine.
