Johannisberg is a local name for the grape variety also known as Sylvaner or Gros Rhin. The variety of names tells the story of the grape's origin. It is believed to have originally come from Transylvania, the mountainous region of modern-day Romania, and traveled through Austria to Germany. From the famous Johannisberg Castle, the grape variety eventually made its way to Valais.
This characteristic white wine with its charming flavor is sure to delight not only hunters. A late uncle of Adrian Mathier, father of Diego Mathier, was a lifelong passionate hunter and dedicated winemaker in Salgesch. Whenever he went hunting, his favorite wine, the Johannisberg, was always with him. In his honor, this wine was named "Weidmannstrunk" after his passing, and a proud pheasant adorns the label.
The Johannisberg Weidmannstrunk impresses with its rich fullness and its distinctive, varietal-typical yet charming flavor. The dry finish completes the harmony of this excellent white wine.
