Tasting notes for the 2016 – 2022 vintages
2022
2022 was a grape harvest like on a wish list. Brilliant weather, ripe, healthy grapes that are absolutely brilliant for winemaking. This very beautiful vintage with its wonderful, strong colour shows a very nice balance between the red, ripe fruit and the noble barrique ageing. The silky, dense tannins and fruitiness carry this Ambassadeur and give it great length and balance. It is already very pleasant to discover and has great ageing potential, allowing you to build up some reserves in your cellar.
2021
A late and wet year resulted in a small but qualitatively remarkable harvest. The wine displays a bright ruby red color. On the nose, fermentation notes are elegantly complemented by the influence of barrel aging. On the palate, it is full of character, underlined by fresh acidity. In its youth, still a bit wild, but it will soften with time.
2020
The color remains intense, deep, and a vibrant garnet red. The grapes harvested on September 10th were perfectly ripe. Aromas of black fruits, balanced by spicy notes from aging in 80% new barrels, promise a magnificent bouquet. Generous on the palate with a silky entry, supported by fresh, powerful tannins. A promising vintage, already showing well.
2019
A deep, intense color highlights this early vintage with a beautiful structure and rich fruit. The nose is spicy and vibrant, supported by well-integrated barrel-aged aromas. On the palate, the tannins are still present, bringing freshness and depth to this powerful Ambassadeur. A sunny vintage that is already enjoyable but holds great aging potential.
2018
A stunning early-ripening vintage, impressing with abundant fruit and fine concentration. The robe is deep and dark with violet reflections. Burgundy-like in expression, warm spices blend with red fruits. On the palate, delicious with depth, supported by fresh acidity. The firm, silky tannins promise many years of enjoyment. Perfect with grilled red meat, now and for years to come.
2017
This vintage presents a deep ruby red color. The small harvest produced a powerful, very fruity wine with excellent concentration and freshness on the palate. The bouquet is fully developed with notes of spices and a subtle smoky aroma. Compact and juicy, it impresses with its length and firm tannins. Generous and juicy, it is currently at its best for drinking.
2016
The robe shines with freshness. The strict destemming required for this generous vintage has paid off. The bouquet evolves harmoniously with notes of figs and ripe fruits. The fleshy, delicious palate is supported by fresh acidity and is gradually rounding out. A vintage with good aging potential, currently perfect with braised meats and poultry.
The L'Ambassadeur de Diego Mathier red is undeniably the flagship of the winery of Switzerland's best winemaker of the decade and the pride of the Mathier family. This single-varietal Pinot Noir is recognized as the most successful Swiss and Valais red wine. Enthusiastic ambassadors of this wine are members of the exclusive Mathier Ambassadeur Club. Since the 2013 vintage, it has been joined by the equally successful L'Ambassadeur de Diego Mathier white.
The 2023 vintage promises to be another excellent year. The grapes were harvested on 29 September in perfect health and ideal ripeness. The colour is a deep dark ruby red with violet reflections. The nose is still discreet, with clearly present notes of ageing accompanied by cherries and wild strawberries, which will gradually harmonise with the finesse of the oak. There is beautiful tension on the palate for this vintage, which is full of freshness. The tannins are dense and firm, promising good ageing potential. With a long and delicious finish, this ambassador invites us to forget it in the cellar for a while to allow its charm to harmonise before accompanying your meals.
The Ambassadeur reaches its full maturity and intensity after 15 months of aging in new oak barrels. This maturation process is also responsible for the remarkable aging potential of the L'Ambassadeur de Domain Diego Mathier red. Due to the highly limited production, the red Ambassadeur is primarily sold through certificates.
