This Merlot is a wonderful accompaniment to juicy lamb chops with rosemary potatoes or a tender beef fillet in red wine sauce. A hearty mushroom lasagne or a creamy risotto with truffles also highlight its elegant fullness.
The Saager family from Zurich has been steering the fortunes of Eikendal Vineyards since 1981 – and recognised early on the promise of the ‘Golden Triangle’ between Somerset West and Stellenbosch. On 76 hectares, shaped by Atlantic breezes, False Bay coolness and characterful soils, grapes full of expression are grown. Precise viticulture and sensitive cellar work keep fruit, structure and elegance in balance. The result is wines with international appeal that prove that origin and modernity are not opposites, but a liaison in the glass.
The Eikendal Merlot 2020 is deep ruby red in the glass. The nose reveals dense aromas of ripe plums, black cherries and cassis, accompanied by hints of dark chocolate, cedar wood and a subtle spiciness. On the palate, it is velvety with ripe tannins, a harmonious structure and a long, elegant finish.
The wine is aged in barriques.
Eikendal's Merlot vines thrive at an altitude of around 170 metres in Stellenbosch. They are rooted in “Koffieklip” soils with a layer of clay about one metre deep and are consistently oriented in an east-west direction – ideal conditions for balance and expression in the wine.
