The vineyards of the city of Bern are steeped in history. Once, the slopes along Lake Biel were owned by the monasteries of Fraubrunnen, Thorberg, St. Johann, Frienisberg, and Münchenbuchsee. Following the Reformation in 1528, these church properties were nationalized and transferred to the city and Republic of Bern. After the fall of Old Bern, the city’s holdings were separated from the former republic’s estates. In 1802, all vineyards were transferred to the Burgergemeinde Bern. Later, in 1852, the vineyards were taken over by the Einwohnergemeinde Bern, established in 1833. Since then, they have been managed by the city’s finance department and overseen by a vineyard administrator.
Today, the city of Bern owns around 20 hectares of prime vineyard land along Lake Biel, between La Neuveville and Schafis, making it the largest vineyard owner in the canton of Bern.
Since early 2022, the vineyard has been certified with the BIOSUISSE label.
This wine showcases an intense ruby red color. Its flavor is full-bodied, with berry aromas and a smooth, balanced finish.
The wine is traditionally aged in stainless steel tanks.
The Pinot Noir grapes thrive above Lake Biel on the limestone-rich soils of the Jura region.
