Perfect with herb-crusted lamb, saddle of venison or duck with wild mushrooms. A mature goat's cheese or strong Bordeaux cheese also harmonise excellently with this second wine.
The origins of La Mission Haut-Brion date back to the 16th century, when Arnaud de Lestonnac laid the foundation stone. From 1682 onwards, the Lazarist priests shaped the estate, building the famous chapel in 1698 and making the wine widely known. After several changes of ownership, a new heyday began in 1983 with the Dillon family. As La Mission's second wine, La Chapelle continues to reflect the soul of the terroir – with a name that recalls the historic chapel and keeps alive the deep connection between spirituality and wine tradition.
La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion exudes aromas of blackberry, tobacco and undergrowth, accompanied by subtle smoke and spice. Juicy on the palate with a clear structure, fine tannins and elegant fruit restraint – powerful, but not overloaded.
The grapes are harvested together with those from La Mission and rigorously selected. Each parcel is vinified separately. The wine is aged in barriques for 18 to 22 months, with La Chapelle using a smaller proportion of new wood than the Grand Vin (typically 20–25% new wood).
The vines grow in Pessac-Léognan on typical gravel and sandy soils with clay subsoil, which provide excellent drainage and heat retention. This terroir gives Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc their characteristic power and finesse – the basis for both the Grand Vin and La Chapelle.
