A Clos du Marquis loves dishes with structure and aromatic depth that absorb its cool precision, graphite-like spice and fine-grained tannins without weighing it down. It pairs particularly well with roasted aromas, earthy notes and a hint of acidity on the plate. This is exemplified by roast duck breast with sour cherry jus and celery purée or, for vegetarians, mushroom Wellington in crispy puff pastry with truffle jus.
Clos du Marquis was created in 1902 and named after the Petit Clos next to the seat of the Marquis de Las Cases. It belongs to Domaines Delon and is an independent cuvée from clearly defined parcels west of the Enclos of Léoville-Las Cases – often confused with the second wine, but in fact an independent Saint-Julien with its own identity. The aim is to precisely interpret the character of the appellation: structure, harmony and ageing potential.
Dark ruby with a violet rim. On the nose, cassis, black cherry and blackberry, underpinned by violet, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and a hint of dark chocolate. Dense, clear and taut on the palate, with fine-grained, ripe tannins and cool freshness. Long, precise finish with a salty-mineral touch and a spicy aftertaste.
Selective hand-picking, fermentation by plot in temperature-controlled wooden, concrete or steel tanks with moderate extraction; malolactic fermentation usually in tanks. Depending on the vintage, aged for around 12–20 months in French oak, of which around 40–55% is new, to develop structure and ageing potential.
The grapes come from around 45 hectares west of the Enclos on the Saint-Julien plateau: Quaternary gravel with sandy-clay subsoil, humus-rich topsoil and very good drainage. The slightly cooler location brings later ripening, cool precision, dense core and the typical graphite-like character.
