In addition to classic Bordeaux pairings such as beef, lamb and game – whether roasted or braised – the 2018 Montrose also goes wonderfully with grilled duck breast in an Asian hoisin marinade, aubergine lasagne or a risotto with porcini mushrooms and Pecorino cheese. For those who like something a little more daring: dark chocolate with chilli or an aromatic barbecue with smoke and spices – the wine holds its own and reveals new facets.
Château Montrose, founded in the early 19th century by Etienne Théodore Dumoulin, is now considered one of the great references of Saint-Estèphe. Thanks to its spectacular location directly on the Gironde, it is often referred to as the ‘Château of the two banks’. Classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé in 1855, it has lost none of its reputation since then. Since 2006, brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues have been running the estate and investing in sustainable innovations without losing sight of Montrose's classic character.
The 2018 Montrose is a dense ruby red with a complex aroma of black fruits, delicate floral notes and a subtle smokiness. Powerful and silky on the palate, with impressive aromatic depth, elegance and great precision. A Saint-Estèphe with energy, finesse and enormous ageing potential.
The grapes were vinified parcel by parcel, after rigorous selection and particularly gentle extraction, in order to preserve the aromatic precision of the vintage. The wine was then aged in barriques, with high-quality press wines also being specifically integrated into the blend.
The Montrose vines are rooted in close proximity to the Gironde on around 95 hectares of deep gravel and clay soils. This unique terroir of Saint-Estèphe ensures optimal drainage, stores heat and gives Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot their distinctive power and longevity.
