Saint-Pierre shows its strengths with dishes that bring depth, roasted aromas and a little herbal freshness without being too heavy. Particularly harmonious are oxtail ragout on creamy polenta or – as a fine vegetarian alternative – grilled portobello mushrooms with Gruyère and herb jus.
Château Saint-Pierre is one of the discreet greats of Saint-Julien. The historic, small-scale estate was divided in the 19th century and reunited by Henri Martin in 1982; today, the Triaud family is at the helm. Continuous modernisation in the cellar and precise parcel work characterise a style that combines clarity, structure and calm depth.
Dark ruby with violet glints. On the nose, blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry, interspersed with notes of violet, thyme, cedar shavings, pencil, cocoa and a hint of smoke. Tight and straightforward on the palate with cool juiciness, densely woven, fine-grained tannins and precise acidity. The finish is long and focused, with mineral grip and fine spice.
Selective harvesting, fermentation by plot in temperature-controlled tanks with gentle, moderate extraction; malolactic fermentation mainly in tanks. Maturation for around 14–16 months depending on the vintage in French oak with a significant proportion of new barrels to refine the texture and length.
The vines grow on the Garonne gravel terraces of Saint-Julien with sandy-clay subsoil, not far from the Gironde. The well-drained terroir and the moderating river climate promote cool ripening, dense core fruit and the characteristic, finely mineral line.
