Nero d'Avola is versatile and charming at the table. It accompanies braised lamb with rosemary as well as Sicilian caponata or pasta alla Norma with aubergines. Mature pecorino or a juicy Fiorentina steak are also ideal partners.
In the 1980s, Salvatore Di Gaetano and Vinzia Novara founded Firriato to bring Sicily's diversity to the glass. At its heart is Baglio Sorìa near Trapani – 110 hectares of red marl and clay soils right by the sea. This is where Santagostino Rosso was born, the flagship of the house for over 30 years. Today, the family cultivates six certified organic vineyards from volcanic slopes to coastlines and pursues its vision of ‘Authentic Terroir’: pure Sicily, interpreted in a sustainable and contemporary way.
Deep ruby red with purple reflections. The nose reveals a dense fruitiness of plum, blackberry, black cherry and blueberry, complemented by nuances of clove, black pepper, liquorice, dark chocolate and earthy notes. Powerful yet smooth on the palate, with velvety tannins and a long finish.
The wine is aged for 6 months in oak barrels.
The Nero d'Avola vines for Chiaramonte grow on the Tenuta Dàgala Borromeo estate near Trapani. At an altitude of around 200 metres, facing south and south-west, they benefit from the warm climate, clayey-calcareous soils and cooling sea breezes – ideal conditions for powerful, characterful grapes.
