The benefactor

Humagne Rouge Hospices de Salquenen

AOC Valais
The name Humagne Rouge derives from the Latin "Vinum humanum"—a wine considered healthy for humans, a true benefactor. Just like the Knights of Malta, who, starting in the 13th century, tirelessly cared for travelers and pilgrims seeking shelter and food in their hospice in Salgesch. In this spirit, a heartfelt "Cheers!"

Veal, pork, poultry, and hard cheese make wonderful companions. They pair especially well with a Valais-style schnitzel – a pork cutlet enhanced with apricots and raclette cheese.

Wine history
chevron-down

Salgesch still proudly bears the Maltese cross in its coat of arms. In the Middle Ages, clergymen settled in the heart of Valais, following their vows by offering exemplary hospitality and medical care to travelers, the sick, and those in need. With generous donations from the local population, they were able to achieve remarkable feats.

The winemakers of Salgesch supported the brothers of the order by providing wine, which was stored in large wooden barrels in the cool cellars of the hospice. At that time, the village's well water was often contaminated, so the Hospitallers relied on pure wine to restore the strength of weary travelers and the sick. It’s no surprise that the reputation of this wine soon spread far beyond the Simplon.

The wines of the "Hospices de Salquenen" line, created by Diego Mathier, the winemaker of the decade, are a delightful tribute to the unparalleled commitment of the Hospitallers—a legacy that Salgesch remains proud of today.

Tasting note
chevron-down

Its deep color reflects its youthfulness. The bouquet is shaped by characteristic aromas of undergrowth and wild berries. On the palate, it impresses with rustic tannins and a lively acidity. It is already very balanced just after bottling.

Vinification
chevron-down

A short maceration to retain the precious fruit and extract only a small amount of tannin. This is followed by traditional vinification in stainless steel tanks.
