Syrah Hospices de Salquenen

AOC Valais
Syrah arrived in Salgesch centuries later, long after the Hospitallers had left their hospice. But with its powerful and noble presence in the glass, it proudly recalls the former brothers, who expanded their influence from Salgesch to the Simplon and northern Italy to do good deeds there as well.

Culinary recommendation

Beef, veal, lamb, and game meat are excellent choices. This pairs particularly well with a flavorful lamb fillet tip on thyme couscous.

Wine history
chevron-down

Salgesch still proudly bears the Maltese cross in its coat of arms. The clergy who settled in Valais during the Middle Ages fulfilled their vow by offering exemplary hospitality and medical care to travelers, the sick, and those in need. Thanks to the generous donations of the local population, the order was able to perform truly knightly deeds.

The winemakers of Salgesch supported the brothers of the order by providing them with wine. These noble wines were stored in large wooden barrels in the cool cellars of the hospice. At that time, the water from the village well was often contaminated and full of harmful germs. Thus, the Hospitallers trusted the pure wine to restore the strength of weary travelers and the sick. It’s no surprise that the quality of this wine quickly became renowned far beyond the Simplon.

The wines of the "Hospices de Salquenen" line, created by Diego Mathier, winemaker of the decade, are a delightful tribute to the unmatched dedication of the Hospitallers, a legacy that Salgesch still proudly honors today.

Tasting note
chevron-down

In the glass, it displays a ruby-red hue with violet highlights. The bouquet reveals aromas of dark berries, with a hint of pepper on the nose. On the palate, it is full-bodied with impressive maturity. The long finish is supported by silky tannins. It is already very well-balanced right after bottling.

Vinification
chevron-down

A short maceration to preserve the valuable fruit aromas and extract only a small amount of tannin. This is followed by traditional vinification in stainless steel tanks.
